We fly over the Andes and over the enormous rainforest. Through the clouds we can see the brown river winding like a snake far below. It is hard to imagine that people live here. We travel by canoe along the river to our lodge. Along the riverbank we see capybaras (large rodents), crocodiles and several different kinds of birds. After a short walk we arrive at our home for the next few days, Posada Amazonas.

Cusco - Puerto Maldonado (L, M)

Flight from Cusco and arrival at Puerto Maldonado airport. Here we are met by our guide who takes us to the main office where we can leave luggage that is not needed during our stay in the rainforest. We drive 20 minutes to Tambopata “port” where a riverboat takes us on an exciting journey along the river for about 1 hour. We dock at the riverbank and walk 15 minutes into the greenery of the jungle, to our lodge Posada Amazonas. Here we are informed about the area and check into our room. Our first excursion takes us through the jungle to the observation tower which is 30 m high. The wildlife up in the treetops is very lively and colorful toucans and parrots swoop by. The view is magnificent, dense rainforest as far as the eye can see. Return to the lodge for dinner.

Puerto Maldonado (F, L, M)

After a good night’s sleep and an early breakfast, it’s time to explore the area. We travel on the river again for about 30 minutes and then walk 45 minutes to Lake Tres Chimbadas. Here we paddle quietly in a homemade catamaran consisting of two kayaks and a wooden pontoon. The wildlife we expect to see here includes the endangered giant otters, caimans and a rich birdlife. Return to the lodge. Only a 20-minute walk from the lodge is the viewpoint where we look for parrots. The mud wall in front of us attracts these colorful birds to a hearty dinner, it is the mineral-rich mud that they munch on. Return to the lodge for lunch. The day continues with a visit to the local community Centro Nape. Centro Nape is an organization that, among other things, produces natural medicine from the rainforest’s resources and offers this medicine to the small infirmary located here. One of the residents here teaches us about the different plants and their function. Return to the lodge for dinner. The darkness in the rainforest attracts other species of animals than those we see during the day. With a flashlight at full power, we walk along a marked path on an interesting journey of discovery. The rainforest is experienced differently in the dark and the bizarre sounds of the frogs increase the excitement.

Puerto Maldonado – Cusco/Lima (F)

Breakfast. Early in the morning we travel along the river back to Puerto Maldonado and the headquarters. Here we pick up our luggage and then take the transfer to the airport. Flight to Cusco or Lima. B = Breakfast L = Lunch M = Dinner Book your trip to the Amazon with Inca Tours!
