Reseprogram:

Lima/Cusco - Puerto Maldonado (L, M)

Flight from Lima/Cusco and arrival at Puerto Maldonado airport. Here we are met by our guide who takes us to the main office where we can leave luggage that is not needed during our stay in the Amazon rainforest. We then drive 20 minutes to Tambopata “port” where a riverboat takes us on an exciting journey along the river for about 1 hour. We dock at the riverbank and walk 15 minutes into the jungle greenery to our lodge Posada Amazonas. Here we are informed about the area and check into our room. Our first excursion is a 20-minute walk that takes us through the jungle to a 35-meter high observation tower. The wildlife up in the treetops is very lively and colorful toucans and parrots can be seen flitting by. The view is magnificent, dense rainforest as far as the eye can see and the winding Tambopata River far below. Return to the lodge for dinner.

Puerto Maldonado (F, L, M)

After a good night’s sleep and an early breakfast, it’s time to explore the area. We travel on the river again for about 30 minutes and then walk 45 minutes to Lake Tres Chimbadas. Here we paddle around in a homemade catamaran consisting of two kayaks and wooden pontoons. The wildlife we expect to see here includes the endangered giant otters, caimans and a rich birdlife. You can also try your luck at piranha fishing. After another 20 minutes of travel along the river, we arrive at the local community Centro Nape. Centro Nape is an organization that, among other things, produces natural medicine from rainforest plants, which they then offer to the small infirmary that is also located in the area. We get a guided tour along a path in the jungle while we are informed about the different plants and their function. Return to the lodge for dinner. The darkness in the rainforest attracts other animal species than those we see during the day. Equipped with flashlights, we walk along a marked path on an interesting journey of discovery. The rainforest is experienced differently in the dark and the bizarre sounds of the frogs further enhance the atmosphere.

Puerto Maldonado (F, L, M)

Only a 20-minute walk from the lodge is a lookout point where we will be looking for parrots today. The mud wall in front of us contains several useful minerals that the parrots want to eat, which means a veritable feast and in many cases an enormous number of birds to see. Return to the lodge for lunch. After lunch we set off on a two-hour hike where we will, among other things, see the largest tree in the entire region – a gigantic ancient Ceiba tree. During the hike we will focus on the unique flora of the rainforest where most plant species will be observed more closely. A thirty-minute boat trip downstream from the river will then take us to one of the most developed farms in the area, whose owners grow many different crops, both typical and atypical for the Amazon. Return to the lodge for dinner. After dinner we take an evening trip along the river to look for caimans. With our flashlights we shine into the vegetation along the shoreline and are fascinated by the red, glowing eyes in the night.
