Lake Titicaca is the highest lake in the world that has a fully functioning navigation system.

It was here in the lake that the Inca culture was born, as the first Inca king Manco Capac and his queen are said to have risen from the lake before heading to Cusco to create their capital and kingdom.

Out here on the islands, the Indians live as they have for many years and the old cultures still live on today. Visit the Uros people on their reed islands and admire the weaving techniques of the Taquile inhabitants. Their weaving workshops have been distinguished by UNESCO itself. You can also extend your visit here by staying over on Amantani Island where you get really close to the locals in their everyday lives. End the day with a dance dressed in traditional clothing!

Cusco-Puno (L)

Along small villages and beautiful landscapes you travel by bus (approx. 8 hours) from Cusco to the final destination Puno. Along the way you visit Andahuaylillas, the village known for its baroque church from the 17th century. Snow-capped peaks and enormous plains with guanacos (wild llamas) surround you as you drive over the highest pass La Raya at 4335 m above sea level. Then you visit the interesting Inca temple of Viracocha in the village of Raqchi. Lunch is taken in the town of Sicuani. Upon arrival in Puno, transfer to hotel. A Tip! For an additional fee, you can change bus for train. This route has been named one of the world’s top 10 best train routes in the world. These classic (Titicaca) or luxurious (Belmond) trains only run certain days of the week. A glass observation car at the back of the train provides an opportunity to view a fantastic landscape. Lake Titicaca (F, L)

Today you will explore the mythical Lake Titicaca by speedboat. The first stop is on Uros, the floating reed islands. These unique islands consist of thick layers of reeds and the locals live in reed huts. They make their living from fishing and tourism. The next stop is on the island of Taquile. Here, time seems to have stood still. Along a steep staircase you will climb to the top where the small community is located. In the square there are restaurants and a couple of shops. The beautiful hand-knitted clothes are usually knitted by the men. The people on the island live by the three Inca rules, “you shall not lie”, “you shall not steal” and “you shall not be lazy”. Our boat trip includes a nice meal cooked in the Andean way. Return to Puno and transfer to the hotel.
